Yes, in two situations. The first is a PC that can’t run Windows 11 but needs Pro features such as BitLocker or Remote Desktop while it is still receiving security updates. The second is a PC that can run Windows 11, because upgrading to Pro first means the free Windows 11 upgrade lands you on Windows 11 Pro.

The timeline is important. Windows 10 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Home and Pro PCs enrolled in Microsoft’s consumer Extended Security Updates (ESU) programme keep getting critical security fixes until 12 October 2027. ESU covers security patches only, so Windows 10 will not get any new features.

What’s the difference between Windows 10 Home and Pro?

Pro includes everything in Home, plus tools for encryption, remote access, virtualisation and central management. If you only browse, stream and use Office, Home is enough. Pro is worth it once you work from home, handle client data or look after other people’s PCs.

A common reason customers upgrade is Remote Desktop. Home can connect to other computers but can’t be connected to. That becomes a problem the first time you need to reach your office PC from home.

How do I upgrade Windows 10 Home to Pro?

Enter the upgrade key under Change product key, start the upgrade, and let the PC restart. The detailed steps are below.

1. Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation. Check that the edition shows Windows 10 Home.
2. Install any pending Windows updates, then save and close your open work.
3. Select Change product key and enter the 25-character key from your order email.
4. Select Start upgrade. The PC will restart one or more times. Leave it plugged in and don’t switch it off.
5. Go back to Settings > Update & Security > Activation. It should now show Windows 10 Pro and Windows is activated.

Windows activates the new edition once the upgrade finishes and the PC is online. If it asks for a confirmation ID instead, follow the steps in your order email, or use our free confirmation ID tool.

Requirements

• Operating system: a genuine, activated copy of Windows 10 Home, 32-bit or 64-bit. Version 22H2 is recommended, and it is also the version required for ESU.
• S mode: if your PC runs Windows 10 in S mode, switch out of S mode first. Microsoft doesn’t charge for this, and it is done through the Microsoft Store.
• Hardware: no change is needed. Pro runs on any PC that already runs Windows 10 Home. That means a 1 GHz processor, 1 GB RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit), and 32 GB of storage.
• Internet: needed during the upgrade so Windows can activate the Pro edition.

Who should choose a different product?

• You’re installing Windows from scratch. A full Windows 10 Pro key or a Windows 11 Pro licence is simpler than installing Home and then upgrading.
• Your PC already runs Windows 11. Use the Windows 11 Home to Pro upgrade.
• You’re upgrading several office PCs. Ask for a business quote instead of buying single keys.

Will I lose my files or programs when I upgrade?

No. Upgrading Home to Pro is an in-place edition change, not a reinstall. Your documents, installed apps and settings are kept. As with any system change, we still recommend backing up anything important before you start.

Is Windows 10 still safe to use after end of support?

It is safe if the PC is enrolled in Microsoft’s consumer ESU programme, which delivers critical and important security fixes until 12 October 2027. Without ESU, Windows 10 stopped receiving security patches after 14 October 2025. You can enrol through Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

Can I move to Windows 11 Pro for free after upgrading?
