Autodesk updates its requirements after release, so confirm against the live Revit 2026 system requirements article before buying hardware. If you use Desktop Connector for collaboration, Revit 2026 needs version 16.x or later.
Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Revit 2026 still lists Windows 10 v1809 or later, subject to Autodesk’s support lifecycle. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025, and Revit 2027 has moved to Windows 11 only, so any new BIM workstation should run Windows 11. Our Windows 11 system requirements guide covers the TPM and Secure Boot checks.
How much RAM does Revit 2026 need?
Revit 2026 needs 16 GB of RAM at minimum, which Autodesk says is usually enough for a single model of up to about 300 MB on disk. For models up to about 600 MB, Autodesk recommends 32 GB, and for models up to about 1 GB, 64 GB or more. Memory is the component that most often limits Revit performance.
A practical way to size RAM is to look at your largest central model and any linked models you open alongside it. Linked architecture, structure and MEP models all consume memory at the same time, so a coordinator’s machine usually needs more RAM than a designer working on a single discipline.
Watch out for upgrades
Autodesk notes that models created in earlier Revit versions may need more memory for the one-time upgrade to 2026. When a practice moves a large project to a new release, the upgrade is often the first moment a 16 GB machine runs out of memory. Upgrade big models on your best-specified workstation.
In practice, 32 GB is the sensible baseline for professional Revit work today, with 64 GB for large projects, heavy linking or running Revit alongside Navisworks or rendering tools.

What processor is best for Revit?
The best processor for Revit has a high single-core clock speed. Autodesk’s minimum is any Intel or AMD processor at 2 GHz or above, but it specifically recommends the highest single-core base clock you can get, because many modelling operations run on one core. Extra cores help with tasks Revit does parallelise.
Editing elements, regenerating views, synchronising with central and opening models depend heavily on per-core speed. Rendering, printing several views, exporting and some view regeneration can use multiple cores.
That makes a current desktop-class Intel Core or AMD Ryzen chip with strong boost clocks a better Revit choice than a server processor with many slow cores. High-core-count workstation processors make sense mainly if you also render, run analysis software or use heavy multi-threaded tools alongside Revit.
What graphics card does Revit 2026 need?
Revit 2026 needs a DirectX 11 capable graphics card with Shader Model 5 and 24-bit colour. Autodesk recommends at least 4 GB of video memory for the Minimum tier, 6 GB for Value and 8 GB for Performance. For the Accelerated Graphics Tech Preview, Autodesk recommends 8 GB or more of video memory.
Video memory matters more as models, screens and view complexity grow. Large 3D views, realistic visual styles and 4K monitors all draw on VRAM. Autodesk lists up to Ultra-High Definition (4K) displays across all tiers.
Both gaming and workstation-class cards can run Revit. Workstation cards (NVIDIA RTX professional or AMD Radeon PRO) cost more and offer certified drivers, which some firms prefer for stability. Whichever you choose, keep the driver current; outdated graphics drivers are behind many of the display problems Revit users report.

How much disk space and bandwidth does Revit need?
Revit 2026 needs 30 GB of disk space to install, and Autodesk recommends a further 100 GB of free space for temporary files. Use a fast NVMe SSD for the program, local files and the temp folder. For Revit Cloud Worksharing, Autodesk adds disk space of three times the size of the RVT files you access, plus a reliable internet connection.
| Cloud worksharing need | Minimum | Value | Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Connection per machine (burst transfers) | Symmetrical 5 Mbps | Symmetrical 10 Mbps | Symmetrical 25 Mbps |
| Local disk for cloud models | 3x the total size of equivalent RVT files for all cloud workshared projects you access | ||
Autodesk also recommends keeping Revit Personal Accelerator running on each user’s machine, even when Revit is closed. It keeps recent changes to cloud models up to date locally, so opening a model does not mean downloading every change again.
Symmetrical means upload as well as download. Many office broadband lines have much slower upload speeds, which shows up as slow synchronisation with central on cloud projects.

Can you run Revit 2026 on a Mac?
Revit 2026 does not run natively on macOS. Autodesk documents a recommended configuration using Parallels Desktop for Mac to run Windows in a virtual machine: Windows 11 on Apple silicon or Intel Macs, 16 GB of memory for the virtual machine, at least 4 GB of video memory dedicated to it and a minimum of 40 GB free disk space.
| Component | Autodesk’s Mac configuration for Revit 2026 |
|---|---|
| Host Mac | 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 or newer Intel Mac, or any Apple silicon Mac; 16 GB memory |
| Virtualisation | Parallels Desktop for Mac |
| Guest operating system | Windows 11 (Apple silicon or Intel); Windows 10 v1809 or later (Intel only) |
| Virtual machine memory | 16 GB |
| Virtual machine video memory | 4 GB minimum dedicated (Automatic setting from Parallels 14 onwards) |
| Disk space | 40 GB minimum, 100 GB recommended |
Autodesk advises not to use the “Use Hardware Acceleration” option in Revit inside Parallels and does not recommend the Accelerated Graphics Tech Preview there. A virtual machine shares the Mac’s memory, so a Mac with 32 GB or more is far more comfortable than one with 16 GB. For larger projects, a dedicated Windows workstation remains the safer choice.
What is the best computer for Revit?
The best computer for Revit 2026 combines a high-clock Intel or AMD processor, 32–64 GB of RAM, a DirectX 11 GPU with 6–8 GB or more of video memory, and a fast NVMe SSD with plenty of free space. Match the tier to your largest models rather than buying on brand or core count.
| User | CPU | RAM | GPU | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Students, small residential models | Recent desktop-class chip, high boost clock | 16–32 GB | 4–6 GB VRAM | 1 TB NVMe SSD |
| Practice designers, typical projects | Recent 8+ core, very high single-core clock | 32–64 GB | 8 GB VRAM | 1–2 TB NVMe SSD |
| BIM coordinators, large linked models | High-end desktop or workstation chip | 64–128 GB | 8 GB+ VRAM workstation card | 2 TB+ NVMe SSD |
Desktop or laptop?
Desktops give more performance per pound, cool better under sustained load and are easier to upgrade. Laptops work well for Revit if they have a dedicated GPU, upgradeable memory and good cooling. Thin laptops often throttle their processors during long tasks such as syncing or exporting.
Revit LT and Revit 2027
Revit LT 2026 has requirements close to the Revit Minimum tier: 16 GB RAM and a DirectX 11 GPU with 4 GB of video memory recommended. Revit 2027, the current release, requires Windows 11 and moves to .NET 10, so build any new machine with that upgrade path in mind. If you are still deciding whether you need BIM at all, our Revit vs AutoCAD guide compares the two.
For a high-memory or dual-processor workstation, Windows 11 Pro for Workstations supports larger memory and more CPUs than standard editions; most single-CPU BIM machines run happily on Windows 11 Pro.
Frequently asked questions
Is 16 GB RAM enough for Revit 2026?
For small projects, yes. Autodesk lists 16 GB as the minimum and says it usually handles a single model of up to about 300 MB on disk. Larger models, linked files or upgrading projects from older versions will push 16 GB machines hard. For professional work, 32 GB is the more comfortable baseline, and 64 GB suits large projects.
Does Revit use the GPU or CPU more?
Revit relies mostly on the CPU and RAM. Modelling, regeneration, syncing and opening models depend heavily on single-core processor speed and available memory. The graphics card handles view display, navigation and visual styles, so it matters for large 3D views and high-resolution screens, but a faster GPU will not fix a CPU or memory bottleneck.
Can Revit 2026 run on Windows 10?
Autodesk’s Revit 2026 requirements list 64-bit Windows 10 v1809 or later as well as Windows 11, subject to its product support lifecycle. However, Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on 14 October 2025, and Revit 2027 requires Windows 11. For security and future upgrades, run Revit 2026 on Windows 11 wherever possible.
Does Revit need an SSD?
Autodesk lists disk space rather than drive type for Revit 2026, but an SSD makes a clear difference. Opening models, saving local files, loading families and handling temporary files are all faster on NVMe storage. Keep at least 100 GB free for temporary files, as Autodesk recommends, and store local copies of central models on the SSD.
Can I run Revit on an ARM Windows laptop?
Autodesk’s Revit 2026 requirements specify Intel or AMD processors for Windows installations, so ARM-based Windows laptops are not a listed configuration. The only ARM route Autodesk documents is Apple silicon running Windows 11 through Parallels Desktop. If you are buying a Windows laptop for Revit, choose an Intel or AMD model.
How many CPU cores does Revit use?
Revit uses multiple cores for many tasks, such as some view regeneration, printing, exporting and rendering, but much day-to-day modelling runs on a single core. That is why Autodesk recommends the highest single-core base clock speed. Six to eight fast cores suit most users; more cores mainly help if you render or multitask heavily.
The bottom line
Revit 2026 will install on a 16 GB Windows PC, but real projects need a fast-clocked CPU, 32–64 GB of RAM, a 6–8 GB DirectX 11 GPU and a roomy NVMe SSD, ideally on Windows 11.
