Office 2019 in 2026: Support Status, Risks and Upgrade Options

Office 2019 reached end of support on 14 October 2025. Your copy still opens, edits and saves files, but Microsoft no longer releases security fixes, bug fixes or technical help for it. For most people the sensible move in 2026 is an upgrade to Office 2024, supported until October 2029, or to a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Office 2019 is still installed on a huge number of PCs, so this guide covers what end of support really changes, what keeps working, where the genuine risks lie, and how to upgrade without losing your files or settings.

Key takeaways

  • Office 2019 (Windows) left extended support on 14 October 2025. No more security updates are coming.
  • Microsoft stopped supporting Office 2019 connections to Microsoft 365 services, such as Exchange Online and OneDrive for work, back in October 2023.
  • Installed copies keep working, and .docx, .xlsx and .pptx files remain compatible with newer versions.
  • The main risk is unpatched vulnerabilities, especially through malicious attachments and documents.
  • Office 2024 is the natural one-time-purchase upgrade. Office 2021 is not, because its own support ends on 13 October 2026.

Is Office 2019 still supported in 2026?

No. Office 2019 for Windows ended mainstream support in October 2023 and extended support on 14 October 2025. Since then Microsoft has released no security updates, no non-security fixes and no assisted support for any Office 2019 edition, including Professional Plus, Standard, Home & Business and Home & Student.

The dates come from Microsoft’s Office 2019 lifecycle page, which lists them in Pacific Time, so the final day appears as 15 October on some listings. Project 2019 and Visio 2019 share the same end date.

Milestone Date What it means
Release 24 September 2018 Office 2019 goes on sale as a perpetual licence
End of mainstream support 10 October 2023 No new non-security fixes; security updates continue
End of supported Microsoft 365 connectivity 10 October 2023 Connecting to Exchange Online, SharePoint and OneDrive for work becomes unsupported
End of extended support 14 October 2025 No more security updates or technical support

Office 2019 vs 2024 at a glance

Office 2024 is the direct successor in the one-time-purchase line. It receives security updates until 9 October 2029, adds features that Office 2019 never had, such as XLOOKUP and dynamic arrays in Excel, and runs on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Office 2019 has the advantage of already being paid for, and that is about it in 2026.

What still works in Office 2019 after end of support?

Almost everything still works day to day. Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook open, edit, save and print as before, and Microsoft has not switched off already activated installations. What has stopped is maintenance: no patches, no fixes for new bugs, and no help from Microsoft if something breaks.

That is why many users notice nothing at first. The change is invisible until a problem appears that would previously have been fixed in a monthly update.

  • File formats. Office 2019 uses the same Office Open XML formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) as Office 2024 and Microsoft 365, so files move between versions without conversion.
  • Local work. Documents on your own drive behave exactly as they did.
  • Existing licences. An activated Office 2019 Professional Plus or Home & Business licence stays activated. If you need to reinstall an existing licence, our Office 2019 Pro Plus install and activation guide still applies.

Where things start to slip is anything that depends on a cloud service or on features added after 2018, which we cover in the compatibility section below.

Is Office 2019 still safe to use?

Office 2019 is less safe with every month that passes, because any vulnerability discovered after October 2025 stays open. The practical risk is highest for anyone who opens email attachments or downloaded documents, since malicious files are the most common way Office flaws are exploited. Offline, single-purpose use is much lower risk.

Microsoft’s own end-of-support guidance for Office puts it plainly: unsupported versions may develop performance and reliability problems and may be vulnerable to security threats once updates stop.

Who should upgrade first?

  • Anyone using Outlook 2019 for day-to-day email.
  • Businesses handling customer data, invoices or payroll in Excel or Word, where a compromise has regulatory consequences.
  • Shared or family PCs where several people open attachments.

If you must keep Office 2019 for a while

Some people have a reason to wait, such as a legacy add-in or a machine that rarely goes online. In that case, reduce the exposure:

  • Leave Protected View on, and keep macros from the internet blocked in the Trust Center.
  • Avoid using Outlook 2019 as your main email client; webmail in an up-to-date browser is safer.
  • Keep Windows and Microsoft Defender fully updated, since they still catch many threats before Office is involved.
  • Set a firm upgrade date rather than leaving it open-ended.

What compatibility problems will you run into?

The most common problems are Microsoft 365 services that no longer officially support Office 2019, spreadsheets that use newer Excel functions, and modern add-ins that require a later version. None of them stops Office 2019 working outright, but each one adds friction over time.

Microsoft 365 and Exchange Online

Microsoft ended support for connecting Office 2019 to Microsoft 365 services on 10 October 2023. According to its connectivity policy, older versions may still connect, but Microsoft does not test service changes against them, so you can hit sync or sign-in problems that nobody will fix.

Newer Excel functions

Workbooks created in Office 2021, 2024 or Microsoft 365 can use functions that Excel 2019 does not have, such as XLOOKUP, FILTER, UNIQUE and LET. In Excel 2019 those cells typically show #NAME? errors. A common support ticket we see is “my colleague’s spreadsheet is broken”, when the file is fine and the Excel version is the issue.

Windows and add-ins

Office 2019 still installs on Windows 11, but Microsoft no longer supports that combination. If the same PC is still on Windows 10, it is now unsupported on two fronts; our Windows 10 ESU guide explains the options for the operating system side.

What are your Office 2019 upgrade options?

You have two realistic routes: a one-time purchase of Office 2024, or a Microsoft 365 subscription. Office 2024 suits people who want to pay once and keep things familiar. Microsoft 365 suits people who want cloud storage, several devices, Copilot and continuous updates. Office 2021 is not a sensible target because it leaves support on 13 October 2026.

Option Payment Supported until Best for
Office Home 2024 One-time, 1 PC or Mac 9 October 2029 Home users who only need Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote
Office Home & Business 2024 One-time, 1 PC or Mac 9 October 2029 Home offices and sole traders who use Outlook
Office Professional Plus 2024 One-time, 1 Windows PC 9 October 2029 Users who need Access or match an older Pro Plus 2019 setup
Microsoft 365 Personal or Family Yearly or monthly subscription Ongoing while subscribed Multiple devices, 1 TB OneDrive, Copilot
Office 2021 One-time 13 October 2026 Not recommended as an upgrade in 2026

If you are moving from Office 2019 Professional Plus, the closest like-for-like replacement is Office 2024 Professional Plus for Windows, which keeps Access but no longer includes Publisher. For a home office that mainly needs Outlook, Office 2024 Home & Business for PC is the leaner choice.

How to upgrade from Office 2019 to Office 2024

Upgrading takes about 30 minutes. Back up anything stored only inside Office, remove Office 2019 completely, install Office 2024 from Microsoft, then activate it with your new product key. Your documents are not affected, because they live in your folders, not inside the Office installation.

  1. Back up Office-specific data. Export Outlook data if you use a POP account (File > Open & Export > Import/Export to a .pst file), and copy custom templates from %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates.
  2. Note your add-ins. In each app, open File > Options > Add-ins and record anything you rely on, so you can reinstall compatible versions.
  3. Uninstall Office 2019. Use Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or follow our guide to completely uninstall Office if a normal removal leaves traces behind.
  4. Restart the PC. This clears locked files and pending installer tasks.
  5. Install Office 2024. Download the installer for your edition from Microsoft; our Office 2024 Pro Plus install guide walks through each screen.
  6. Activate with your product key. Open Word, go to File > Account, and enter the key when prompted. If online activation fails for a phone-activation key, use our Confirmation ID tool.
  7. Restore your data. Re-add your Outlook account or import the .pst file, copy templates back, and reinstall your add-ins.

Frequently asked questions

Can I still use Office 2019 in 2026?

Yes. Office 2019 keeps working after end of support, and Microsoft has not disabled activated installations. You can open, edit and save documents as before. What you lose is protection: no security patches have been released since 14 October 2025, so the risk of using it, especially for email and downloaded files, grows over time.

Will Office 2019 stop working?

Microsoft has not announced any plan to stop Office 2019 from running. Unsupported versions of Office have traditionally continued to work for years. The more likely problems are gradual: Microsoft 365 services may stop working reliably with it, and newer files may use features it cannot display correctly.

Is Office 2019 Professional Plus still worth buying?

For most people, no. It receives no security updates and costs only a little less than a supported version. Office 2024 Professional Plus offers the same core apps plus newer Excel functions and support until October 2029. The exception is a specific legacy system that requires Office 2019 and stays largely offline.

Can I upgrade Office 2019 to 2024 for free?

No. Office 2019 and Office 2024 are separate perpetual products, and Microsoft does not offer a free upgrade between them. You need a new Office 2024 licence or a Microsoft 365 subscription. Your existing documents, however, carry over without any conversion.

Does Office 2019 work on Windows 11?

Office 2019 installs and runs on Windows 11, but Microsoft no longer supports it on any version of Windows. If something goes wrong, there will be no fix. Office 2024 is supported on Windows 11 and is the better pairing for a new or recently upgraded PC.

Can Office 2019 open files from Office 2024?

Generally yes, because both use the same .docx, .xlsx and .pptx formats. Content that depends on newer features may not display correctly. In Excel, formulas using functions such as XLOOKUP or FILTER typically show errors in Excel 2019, and some newer chart types or design elements may appear differently.

The bottom line

Office 2019 still works, but it has been unpatched since October 2025, and the gap with current files and services keeps widening.
