A Windows Server 2022 User CAL gives one named person the right to use the services of a Windows Server 2022 Standard or Datacenter server, from as many devices as they like. Choose a pack of 1, 5, 10, 20 or 50 User CALs; the licence key and licence details arrive by email, usually within minutes.

What a User CAL actually covers
Your server licence (Standard or Datacenter) pays for running Windows Server. It does not cover the people who connect to it. Every user or device that reaches the server for file sharing, printing, authentication through Active Directory, or applications hosted on it needs a CAL.
A User CAL is tied to the person, not the hardware. If one accountant uses a desktop in the office, a laptop at home and a phone for email, that is still one CAL. This is the main reason most offices with one-device-per-person setups end up mixing in User CALs once staff start working remotely.
A Windows Server CAL does not cover Remote Desktop sessions. If people log in to a full desktop or RemoteApp programs hosted on the server, each of them also needs an RDS CAL, such as our Windows Server 2022 RDS User CAL.
User CAL or Device CAL: which one fits?
Count people and count devices. Buy whichever number is lower, then stay consistent.

You can mix User and Device CALs on the same server. Many businesses do exactly that: User CALs for office staff, Device CALs for a warehouse scanner or reception PC.
Who is it for?
- A business moving to a new Windows Server 2022 Standard machine that needs to license its staff properly before an audit or renewal.
- An IT provider setting up a domain controller and file server for a client whose staff work across office PCs and personal laptops.
- A company already on Windows Server 2022 that has hired new people and needs to top up its CAL count.
If your new server will run Windows Server 2025, buy Windows Server 2025 User CALs instead. 2022 CALs cannot be used to access a 2025 server. Running a small business with up to 25 users on Windows Server Essentials? Essentials does not need CALs at all.
Version rule and support status
A CAL must be the same version as the server, or newer. Windows Server 2022 User CALs license access to Windows Server 2022, 2019, 2016 and older servers, which helps if you run a mixed estate during a migration.
Windows Server 2022 left mainstream support on 13 October 2026. Microsoft continues to ship security updates until 14 October 2031, according to the Windows Server 2022 lifecycle page. For an existing 2022 deployment that is still several years of patched life; for a brand-new build, 2025 gives you longer.

How to activate and record your CALs
- Choose your pack size and complete checkout.
- Open the order email and save the licence key and licence details.
- Add the CAL count to your licensing records next to the server licence it belongs to. Windows Server does not ask for a CAL key, so this record is your proof of entitlement.
- If staff also use Remote Desktop, buy and install RDS CALs on your RD Licensing server.
- Keep the email somewhere you can find it during a software asset review.

How many users does one Windows Server 2022 User CAL cover?
One User CAL covers one named person. That person can connect from any number of devices, so a laptop, desktop and phone all count as one CAL. A pack of 10 covers 10 named people.
Do I enter the CAL key on the server?
No. Windows Server does not have a field for standard CAL keys. The key and licence details in your email are your record of entitlement. Keep them with your server licence paperwork for audits.
Can I use 2022 CALs with Windows Server 2025?
No. CALs must match or be newer than the server version. 2022 User CALs cover 2022 and older servers, so a Windows Server 2025 host needs 2025 CALs.
Do User CALs include Remote Desktop access?
No. Remote Desktop Services needs RDS CALs in addition to Windows Server CALs. Each person using a remote desktop session needs both a Windows Server CAL and an RDS CAL.
Can I reassign a User CAL when someone leaves?
Microsoft's licensing terms allow a CAL to be reassigned permanently to a new user, for example when an employee leaves. Temporary swapping to cover absences is not permitted.
Is Windows Server 2022 still supported?
Mainstream support ended on 13 October 2026. Security updates continue until 14 October 2031, so existing 2022 servers stay patched against vulnerabilities for several more years.
How fast is delivery?
Keys and licence details are sent by email, usually within minutes of payment. Larger packs can take longer if they need a manual check.

Microsoft Softwares will exchange software purchases for up to 30 days after order completion but only if the software has not been downloaded by the customer, you can also return your purchased software within 30 days if the software remains none downloaded for a full refund.

After purchasing keys, you will get a voucher code which is needed to redeem. this voucher code have a lifetime validity but once redeem it then you need to activate your windows or office within 7 working days.
