What is Autodesk Maya 2026?
Autodesk Maya 2026 is a 3D package for modelling, rigging, animating, simulating and rendering, used across film, episodic TV, games and commercials. This release made OpenPBR the default surface shader, added liquid simulation inside Bifrost graphs and bundled Flow Retopology 1.3 for automated clean-up of dense meshes.
It is still the last Maya release that lists Windows 10 support, which makes it a practical choice for studios with older workstations.
What’s new in Autodesk Maya 2026
Every item below is listed on Autodesk’s What’s New in Maya 2026 page.
OpenPBR as the default surface shader
New objects use OpenPBR, an open material standard, which makes look development more portable between applications and renderers.
Arnold for Maya 5.5.3
Autodesk cites major performance gains, initial GPU support for toon shading and an interactive HTML render stats report.
Bifrost 2.13 liquids in the graph
Liquids can now be simulated directly in the Bifrost graph, alongside other new nodes.
Flow Retopology 1.3 included
Automatic retopology for complex geometry, with the option to send jobs to the cloud for processing.
WebM playblasts
Playblasts can be exported as .webm files, and image planes and the Camera Sequencer accept the format.
Unitless math nodes
Many math nodes gained unitless versions. Older DoubleLinear nodes now carry a DL suffix, so custom scripts that reference them may need updating.
Key features
- Polygon and NURBS modelling, Boolean node and retopology
- Rigging with skin clusters, deformers and math nodes
- Keyframe animation in the Graph Editor and Time Slider
- Arnold renderer with CPU and NVIDIA GPU modes on Windows
- Bifrost for liquids, smoke, fire and procedural effects
- USD for Maya 0.31 with light linking support
- OpenColorIO 2.4.1 colour management
- Python scripting and C++ API; .NET 8 API on Windows
Maya 2026 vs Maya 2025: what changed?
Upgrade to 2026 if you want OpenPBR, Bifrost liquids or WebM playblasts; stay on 2025 only if your studio scripts rely heavily on the old DoubleLinear math node names. Both run on Windows 10 and 11.
| Area | Maya 2026 | Maya 2025 |
|---|---|---|
| Default surface shader | OpenPBR | Standard Surface |
| Arnold for Maya | 5.5.3 | 5.4.0 |
| Bifrost | 2.13 with graph liquids | 2.9 with ocean foam |
| Retopology | Flow Retopology 1.3 included | Built-in Retopologize |
| Colour management | OCIO 2.4.1, SynColor dropped | OCIO 2.3.1 |
| Windows support | Windows 10 (1809+) and 11 | Windows 10 (1809+) and 11 |
Who is it for?
- Studios still running Windows 10 that cannot move to Maya 2027 yet.
- Look development artists standardising on OpenPBR materials.
- FX artists who want liquid simulation inside Bifrost graphs.
- Game artists cleaning up scans and sculpts with Flow Retopology.

Frequently asked questions
Is Maya 2026 a subscription?
Yes. This is a 1-year subscription for 1 device, not a perpetual licence. Autodesk only sells Maya on subscription, so the licence runs for 12 months from activation and must be renewed if you want to keep using Maya 2026 after that.
Does Maya 2026 work on Windows 10?
Yes. Autodesk lists Windows 10 version 1809 or higher and Windows 11 for Maya 2026. Note that Microsoft has ended mainstream Windows 10 support, so plan an OS upgrade; Maya 2027 lists Windows 11 only.
Can I install Maya 2026 on two PCs?
No, not at the same time. The licence covers 1 device. Because you sign in with your Autodesk Account, you can usually sign out of one PC and sign in on another, but you cannot run both simultaneously.
Is there a Mac version of this listing?
No. This product is the Windows edition of Maya 2026. Mac users should buy the Mac edition, which supports macOS 15, 14 and 13 on Apple silicon or Intel. Scene files open on both platforms.
What happens to Maya 2026 after 12 months?
After 12 months the subscription expires and Maya 2026 is no longer licensed on your PC. Your scenes, textures and caches stay on your drive. Renew or buy a new 1-year term to carry on working.
How do I receive the licence?
You receive it by email, usually a few minutes after payment. The email explains how to sign in to your Autodesk Account and download the Windows installer. If it does not arrive, check spam and then contact our support team.
What PC do I need for Maya 2026?
At minimum, Windows 10 (1809+) or 11, a 64-bit Intel or AMD CPU with SSE4.2, 8 GB RAM and 7 GB of free disk space. Autodesk recommends 16 GB RAM or more and a graphics card from its certified hardware list.
Will my old Maya scripts break in 2026?
Possibly. Maya 2026 renamed some math node types, for example addDoubleLinear became addDL, and Autodesk says custom tools and scripts will need updating. Older scenes still open but show warnings about the deprecated DL nodes.
Is Flow Retopology included with Maya 2026?
Yes. Autodesk includes Flow Retopology 1.3 with Maya 2026. It handles complex geometry and can offload processing to the cloud, which may require an internet connection and Autodesk Flow sign-in.
