What is Autodesk Maya 2026 for Mac?

Autodesk Maya 2026 for Mac is the macOS build of Maya 2026, a professional tool for 3D modelling, rigging, animation, simulation and rendering. It runs natively on Apple silicon (arm64) and on Intel x86 Macs, and includes Arnold, Bifrost, USD for Maya and LookdevX in the same installer family as the Windows version.

The biggest practical difference on a Mac is rendering. Arnold works on Apple M-series CPUs natively, but Arnold’s GPU mode is not available on macOS.

What’s new in Autodesk Maya 2026 for Mac

Drawn from Autodesk’s Maya 2026 What’s New documentation, focusing on changes Mac users will notice.

OpenPBR by default

New objects get the OpenPBR surface shader, which renders on the CPU in Arnold on your Mac and transfers cleanly to other OpenPBR-aware tools.

Liquids in Bifrost graphs

Bifrost 2.13 lets you simulate liquids directly in the graph.

Flow Retopology 1.3

Automatic retopology now ships with Maya and can push heavy jobs to the cloud, handy on a laptop.

WebM playblast export

Export reviews as .webm, a compact format that plays in web browsers for quick client feedback.

OCIO 2.4.1, SynColor removed

Colour management moves to OpenColorIO 2.4.1 and legacy SynColor is no longer supported, which matches how Maya already worked on Apple silicon.

Key features

  • Native Apple silicon (arm64) and Intel x86 support
  • Modelling with Boolean node updates and retopology
  • Rigging, skinning and the Graph Editor for animation
  • Arnold CPU rendering on M-series Macs
  • Bifrost liquids, smoke and procedural effects
  • USD for Maya 0.31 with light linking
  • LookdevX 1.7.0 for USD shading graphs
  • STL import with unit selection for 3D printing work

Maya 2026 Mac vs Windows edition

The Mac and Windows editions share the same features and scene format; the differences are GPU rendering and the operating systems they support. If Arnold GPU rendering is essential, the Windows edition with an NVIDIA card is the one to buy.

Supported OS macOS 15.x, 14.x, 13.x Windows 10 (1809+), Windows 11

Who is it for?

  • Animators on Intel Macs that cannot move to newer macOS-only releases.
  • Mac users on macOS 13 Ventura: this is the newest Maya listing Ventura.
  • Lighting and look-dev artists working with OpenPBR and LookdevX.
  • 3D printing hobbyists who use the new STL unit options.
  • Course providers standardising lab Macs on one version.

Frequently asked questions

Does Maya 2026 support macOS Ventura?

Yes. Autodesk lists macOS 15.x, 14.x and 13.x for Maya 2026, and macOS 13 is Ventura. Maya 2027 drops macOS 13, so Maya 2026 is the newer choice for Macs that cannot upgrade beyond Ventura.

Is Maya 2026 for Mac native on M1, M2, M3 and M4 chips?

Yes. Autodesk lists Apple silicon arm64 as a supported CPU for Maya 2026, so it runs natively on M-series Macs. Intel x86 Macs are supported too, provided they meet the RAM and macOS requirements.

Is this a perpetual Maya licence?

No. It is a 1-year subscription for 1 Mac, not a perpetual licence. Autodesk sells Maya on subscription only. When the year ends you need to renew to keep Maya 2026 licensed.

Can Arnold use my Mac’s GPU?

No. Arnold GPU rendering and OptiX denoising work on Windows and Linux only, according to Autodesk’s Arnold documentation. On macOS, Arnold renders on the CPU, and M-series chips are natively supported for that.

Can I switch the licence between my iMac and MacBook?

You can use it on 1 device at a time. Sign out of Maya on one Mac and sign in on the other with your Autodesk Account. Running both at once is outside the licence terms.

Can I install this on a Windows PC instead?

No. This is the Mac edition. If you need Maya on Windows, choose the Windows edition. Projects move freely between the two, because Maya scene files are the same on both platforms.

What happens after my year is up?

When the 1-year term ends, Maya 2026 stops being licensed on your Mac. Your files are not deleted. You can renew or purchase a new 1-year licence to keep opening and editing scenes in Maya.

How is the licence delivered?

Instantly by email after payment. The message explains how to sign in to your Autodesk Account and download the macOS installer. Most orders are delivered within minutes.

What Mac do I need for Maya 2026?

A Mac running macOS 13, 14 or 15, with Apple silicon or an Intel CPU, 8 GB of RAM (16 GB recommended) and 7 GB of free disk space. Check Autodesk’s certified hardware list for your GPU.
