The short answer to AutoCAD vs AutoCAD LT: choose AutoCAD LT if your work is 2D drafting and documentation, and choose full AutoCAD if you need 3D modelling, the industry toolsets or serious automation. Both open and save the same DWG files, so the decision is about capability and budget, not compatibility.

Key takeaways

  • AutoCAD LT is 2D only. Full AutoCAD adds solid, surface and mesh modelling, rendering and point clouds.
  • Full AutoCAD includes seven specialised toolsets (Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, MEP, Plant 3D, Map 3D, Raster Design), which run on Windows only.
  • AutoCAD LT for Windows has run AutoLISP since the 2024 release, but it has no Visual LISP editor, .NET, ObjectARX, VBA, macros or App Store access.
  • Both are subscription (term) licences. Autodesk’s UK list price for a year of AutoCAD is close to four times that of LT.

AutoCAD vs AutoCAD LT at a glance

AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT share the same interface, drafting engine and DWG file format, so a 2D drawing made in either looks identical. What is the main difference between AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT?

The main difference is scope: AutoCAD LT is Autodesk’s 2D drafting and documentation product, while full AutoCAD handles 2D and 3D, includes specialised industry toolsets and supports the full range of programming interfaces. For pure 2D linework, annotation and plotting, the two behave almost identically.

That last point surprises many buyers. Lines, polylines, hatches, dimensions, multileaders, tables, blocks with attributes, xrefs, layouts and sheet sets all work the same way in LT. A drawing produced in LT is a normal DWG file that any AutoCAD user can open, and the reverse is also true.

What LT leaves out falls into four groups: 3D modelling and visualisation, the toolsets, deeper customisation (.NET, ObjectARX, VBA, macros) and a few CAD-management tools such as standards checking. If none of those appears in your daily work, LT will feel like the same program at a much lower price.

Can AutoCAD LT do 3D?

No. AutoCAD LT cannot create or edit 3D solids, surfaces or meshes, and it has no rendering or materials tools. Autodesk lists 3D modelling, mesh and surface modelling, concept renderings and point cloud editing as full-AutoCAD features only. If you need any 3D output at all, LT is the wrong product.

LT does let you draft isometric drawings, which are 2D representations that look three-dimensional. Many fabrication and services drafters manage happily with isometrics. That is a drafting technique, though, not a model you can rotate, section or export for 3D printing.

In support tickets, a common pattern is a buyer who chose LT for price and later receives a client file containing 3D solids. The geometry stays in the DWG, but LT cannot edit it in any meaningful way. If clients send you 3D work, budget for full AutoCAD from the start.

Does AutoCAD LT support LISP and automation?

Yes, partly. Since the 2024 release, AutoCAD LT for Windows can load and run AutoLISP routines and supports ActiveX/COM automation. It does not include the Visual LISP development environment, ObjectARX, the .NET API, VBA, the Action Recorder or Autodesk App Store add-ons, which all remain exclusive to full AutoCAD.

For many small offices that changes the maths. Simple routines that batch-rename layers, number items or insert standard title blocks often run in LT without changes. Routines that call external applications, rely on certain Visual LISP extensions, or come as compiled plug-ins usually will not.

How to check before you commit

  • List every add-on, plug-in and LISP file your team uses today.
  • Ask the developer whether each one supports AutoCAD LT 2024 or later.
  • Test the routines during Autodesk’s free trial before buying a term licence.

Both products let you create your own command aliases, which is where most drafting speed comes from anyway. Our AutoCAD commands and shortcuts cheat sheet covers the aliases that work in both.

What do the AutoCAD toolsets add?

A full AutoCAD subscription includes seven specialised toolsets: Architecture, Mechanical, Electrical, MEP, Plant 3D, Map 3D and Raster Design. Each adds discipline-specific objects, symbol libraries and automation on top of standard AutoCAD. They install separately, run on Windows only and are not available in AutoCAD LT.

Toolset What it adds Typical users
Architecture Intelligent walls, doors, windows, spaces and automatic sections/elevations Architectural technicians, small practices
Mechanical Standard parts libraries, BOMs, machine drafting standards Product and machine designers
Electrical Schematic symbols, wire numbering, error checking, panel layouts Controls and panel designers
MEP Ducts, pipes, cable trays and building-services systems Building services engineers
Plant 3D P&IDs and 3D plant layouts, isometrics Process plant designers
Map 3D GIS data, coordinate systems, FDO data connections Surveyors, utilities, planners
Raster Design Editing and vectorising scanned drawings Anyone digitising paper archives

If you would use even one toolset properly, full AutoCAD usually earns its higher price. The Architecture toolset, for instance, sits between plain 2D drafting and full BIM software such as Revit, which is a separate product with its own subscription.

How much do AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT cost?

Both products are sold only as subscriptions (term licences), not perpetual licences. At the time of writing, Autodesk’s UK suggested prices, excluding VAT, are £60 a month or £492 a year for AutoCAD LT, and £234 a month or £1,890 a year for AutoCAD. Annual and three-year terms cost less per month than monthly billing.

Autodesk stopped selling new perpetual licences for most desktop products years ago, so any seller offering a “lifetime” AutoCAD licence deserves a hard look. A legitimate subscription gives you the current release plus access to three previous versions, and you can install it on several computers but use it on only one at a time.

Price shifts the decision more than people expect. Over three years, the gap between the two list prices runs into thousands of pounds per seat. For a team of 2D drafters, that money often funds better monitors or one full AutoCAD seat for the person who genuinely needs 3D.

Choose the term licence that matches your work

WinCDKey offers AutoCAD LT for Windows or Mac and full AutoCAD for Windows or Mac as 1-year and 3-year subscription licences, with the latest AutoCAD 2027 for Windows also available. Browse the full Autodesk range to compare options.

Which one should you choose?

Choose AutoCAD LT if you produce 2D plans, sections, details, schematics or layouts and rarely run custom plug-ins. Choose full AutoCAD if you need 3D models or renders, a discipline toolset, point clouds, .NET or VBA automation, or App Store add-ons. When unsure, trial both on your real drawings before buying.

AutoCAD LT suits

  • Architectural technicians producing 2D planning and building-regulation drawings
  • Kitchen, interiors and shopfitting designers working in plan and elevation
  • Contractors and site teams who mainly view, mark up and plot drawings
  • Students and freelancers learning core drafting

Full AutoCAD suits

  • Mechanical and product designers who need 3D parts or assemblies
  • Electrical, MEP and plant designers who would use the matching toolset
  • CAD managers enforcing standards and running heavy automation
  • Anyone receiving 3D DWG files from clients or consultants

Check hardware before you buy. Full AutoCAD with toolsets needs more memory and disk space than LT; our AutoCAD 2026 system requirements guide sets out the numbers. Once you have a licence, the AutoCAD 2026 download and activation guide and the AutoCAD LT installation guide walk you through set-up.

Frequently asked questions

Is AutoCAD LT good enough for professional work?

Yes, for 2D work. AutoCAD LT produces the same DWG drawings as full AutoCAD, with identical dimensioning, annotation, layouts and plotting. Many architectural, interiors and contracting firms run LT for most of their seats. It falls short only when you need 3D, industry toolsets or advanced programming interfaces such as .NET or VBA.

Can AutoCAD LT open AutoCAD files?

Yes. AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD share the DWG format, so LT opens drawings created in full AutoCAD and the reverse. Any 3D solids or toolset objects remain in the file, but LT cannot model or fully edit them. Toolset objects may display as proxy graphics unless an object enabler is available for them.

Can I upgrade from AutoCAD LT to AutoCAD later?

Yes, but not as a simple in-place upgrade. Because both are subscriptions, you would buy a full AutoCAD term licence when your needs change and let the LT term lapse or end. Your drawings carry across unchanged because both products use the same DWG format, and your custom aliases can be copied over.

Does AutoCAD LT run on a Mac?

Yes. Autodesk offers AutoCAD LT for macOS as well as Windows, and full AutoCAD has a Mac version too. The Mac editions have a slightly different interface and some feature gaps compared with Windows, and the specialised toolsets are Windows only. Check Autodesk’s Mac feature notes before committing a team to macOS.

Is there a perpetual or lifetime licence for AutoCAD LT?

Not for new purchases. Autodesk sells AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT as subscriptions, typically monthly, annual or three-year terms. Older perpetual licences bought years ago may still run on their original version, but new legitimate licences are term-based. Treat “lifetime AutoCAD” offers with caution, because they do not match how Autodesk licenses the product.

Is AutoCAD harder to learn than AutoCAD LT?

No, not for 2D. The interface, commands and drafting workflow are the same, so skills transfer directly between them. Full AutoCAD only feels more complex once you move into 3D modelling, toolsets or programming. Many people learn 2D drafting in LT and switch to full AutoCAD without retraining.

The bottom line

If your deliverables are 2D drawings, AutoCAD LT does the job at roughly a quarter of the AutoCAD list price. If you need 3D, a toolset or deep automation, full AutoCAD is the right buy.
