What’s new in Excel 2024?
Excel gets the largest set of changes in the 2024 release. The main ones are:
- 14 new text and array functions: TEXTSPLIT, TEXTBEFORE and TEXTAFTER for breaking up text; VSTACK and HSTACK for joining ranges; TAKE, DROP, CHOOSEROWS and CHOOSECOLS for picking parts of a range; and TOROW, TOCOL, WRAPROWS, WRAPCOLS and EXPAND for reshaping data.
- IMAGE function: places a picture inside a cell from a web address, which is useful for product lists and stock sheets.
- Dynamic charts: charts built on dynamic array formulas update as the results grow or shrink.
- Faster workbooks: better performance when several workbooks are open at once.
In practice, TEXTSPLIT alone replaces many Text to Columns jobs. Splitting an exported customer list into first and last names becomes one formula that updates when the data changes.
Excel 2024 does not include Copilot or Python in Excel. Both are Microsoft 365 features. Microsoft lists all the changes on its Office 2024 what is new page.
Excel 2024 vs Excel 2021
| Feature | Excel 2021 | Excel 2024 (this page) |
|---|---|---|
| XLOOKUP and dynamic arrays | Yes | Yes |
| TEXTSPLIT, VSTACK, TAKE and other new functions | No | Yes |
| IMAGE function | No | Yes |
| Charts linked to dynamic arrays | No | Yes |
| Copilot and Python in Excel | No | No |
| Microsoft support | Ended 13 October 2026 | Until 9 October 2029 |
If you also need Word and Outlook, the Office 2024 Standard 1 PC licence includes this same Excel alongside four other apps and is often cheaper than Excel alone. For presentations, see PowerPoint 2024 for Windows.
Who is it for?
- Bookkeepers and finance staff who build reports from exported data and want TEXTSPLIT and VSTACK to stop doing it by hand.
- Shop owners keeping stock lists with product photos, using the IMAGE function.
- Anyone still running Excel 2016 or 2019, which no longer receive security updates.
